Jessica L. Hamblen, PhD
Jessica L. Hamblen, PhD, is a nationally recognized expert in the long-term response following disasters and the lead developer of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Postdisaster Distress (CBT-PD) program and co-author of the book Treatment for Postdisaster Distress: A Transdiagnostic Approach. She has received federal, state, and foundation funding to evaluate CBT-PD and has provided training and support in CBT-PD to many states including New York, after September 11th, Florida after the 2004 hurricanes, Louisiana after Hurricane Katrina in 2005, Texas after Hurricane Ike in 2008, Maine after the Lewiston shooting in 2023, and North Carolina after the Asheville flood in 2024.
In addition to her evaluation of CBT-PD, Dr. Hamblen has conducted research on the disaster response mental health system. She was involved in an in-depth case study of the Oklahoma City bombing as well as a study of state disaster program directors across a range of national disasters. She is also an author on Skills for Psychological Recovery, a SAMHSA funded intervention for the immediate post-disaster period. She has served as a member of state and national disaster panels, including the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) Disaster Behavioral Health Expert Panel in 2018 and 2026, and has presented her work at numerous national and international meetings.
Dr. Hamblen is a clinical psychologist and associate professor in the department of psychiatry at the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth. She is also the deputy for education at the Department of Veterans Affairs’ National Center for PTSD. Dr. Hamblen attended the State University of New York at Buffalo, where she obtained her PhD in clinical psychology. Afterward, she completed her pre-doctoral internship and post-doctoral fellowship at Dartmouth and the National Center for PTSD.
